Ships
These are the ships that carried Irish Female orphans to Australia between 1848 and 1850 as part of the 'Earl Grey scheme'. On board, and in addition to the orphans, there were usually a small number of emigrant families, a matron, a Surgeon-Superintendent, and members of the ship's crew.
We intend putting on the website details about each shipload of Famine orphans in turn. The information comes from Trevor McClaughlin, Barefoot & Pregnant? Irish Famine Orphans in Australia, vol.2, Genealogical Society of Victoria, [2001] and is reprinted with the permission of the author.
You may need to consult this book for information about the abbreviations used. Your local library may have a copy. See the key or 'Legend' which precedes the pages listing the arrivals in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. For example, "Im. Cor. 49/778" is a reference to letter number 778, for the year 1849 in Immigration Correspondence held in the State Records of New South Wales. "Register, 1, 2, 3." also refers to records held in SRNSW at 4/4715-4717. It is a "Register and applications for orphans" which gives information about the early days in Australia of some of the orphans.
