Orphans

The Irish Famine orphans were young women who came to Australia from Irish workhouses at the height of the Great Famine. Their lives are central to the Famine Memorial at Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney, an inspiration to its artists Hossein and Angela Valamanesh and the pride and joy of their Australian descendants.

We hope they might represent, in a symbolic way, everyone who stayed for a while at Hyde Park Barracks during the nineteenth century.
